The Menswear spring 2020 collection kicked off in Shanghai Yesterday the 6th of June, but Prada’s show is never just a show, the stated reason for this show was to honor the 40th anniversary of Milan being named a sister city of the Chinese cosmopolis.
“I am no longer an artist; I have become a work of art,” spoke a voiceover in the heart of Prada’s Spring 2020 men’s show. Prada has sustained a respectful connection with art, supporting and collaborating with her favorite artists.
The collection was defined as one of optimism, insinuating that being hopeful can be the cure for accepting the darkness of our reality. It’s a sequence of the themes she started at her recent women’s Resort show in New York, but when displayed on male models, it took on a sexier edge.
The outfits were essentials of menswear. Twills, tweeds, shirting, sportswear, khaki—but oversize or misplaced in their symmetry to expose, a bare collarbone in a dusty pink tank, or to emphasize the weirdness of using a cropped jacket over a blazer in similarly material. Collectively the looks covered all the necessities of a legendary male wardrobe with the free spirit of boyhood.
